The Bangladesh Coast Guard has apprehended a notorious criminal and narcotics trader, identified as Md. Russell (36), also known by his alias ‘Don Russell’, during a specialized operation in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. The operation resulted in the seizure of a foreign-made firearm, ammunition, and several locally manufactured weapons.
On Saturday, 25 April, Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, the Media Officer for the Bangladesh Coast Guard, confirmed the arrest through an official press release. Acting on precise intelligence regarding the presence of illegal arms, a tactical team from the Coast Guard conducted a raid in the Sikderpara area, situated within the Sabrang Union of Teknaf Upazila.
During the raid, the suspect was successfully intercepted and taken into custody. A subsequent search of his person and immediate surroundings led to the recovery of several lethal items. The authorities confirmed that the following assets were seized during the proceedings:

Md. Russell is a permanent resident of Sikderpara in the Sabrang Union of Teknaf. According to the Coast Guard’s preliminary interrogation, the suspect has been a long-term operative in the regional underworld. He is allegedly involved in a broad spectrum of criminal activities, including narcotics trafficking, human trafficking, and various acts of terrorism.
The press release further noted that Russell utilised his cache of weapons to exert dominance over the local area. He reportedly employed these arms to intimidate the public, facilitate extortion, and carry out organised criminal activities.
The Bangladesh Coast Guard highlighted that ‘Don Russell’ is a habitual offender with an extensive criminal record. He currently faces a total of eight ongoing cases related to narcotics, human trafficking, and illegal firearms. Records indicate that he had previously been arrested by the Teknaf Police Station in possession of significant quantities of Yaba (methamphetamine) tablets.
The apprehended suspect and the seized weaponry have been processed for further legal action. The Coast Guard reiterated its commitment to maintaining the nation’s law and order, stating that such operations against criminal elements will continue to ensure public safety and regional stability in the coastal border areas.
