The landscape of Bangladeshi cricket administration is undergoing a significant reshuffle as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) moves to fill critical leadership gaps. In a recent virtual plenary session held on Sunday, the board’s directors confirmed that Asif Akbar has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Game Development Committee, a pivotal role tasked with nurturing the nation’s budding cricketing talent.
The vacancy arose following the sudden resignation of the previous chairman, Ishtiaque Sadek. Sadek, who secured his directorship after being nominated by the Dhanmondi Sports Club in the last BCB elections, stepped down just months into his tenure. His departure sparked considerable speculation within the cricketing fraternity, although Sadek himself cited “time constraints” as the primary reason for his inability to manage the demanding portfolio effectively.
While the BCB has reportedly not yet formally accepted Sadek’s resignation letter, the board has moved swiftly to ensure the continuity of its developmental programmes. On 22 February, during an official board of directors meeting, the mantle was passed to Asif Akbar, whose rising profile within the board has been noted by many observers.
Asif Akbar is no stranger to the inner workings of youth cricket. Following his election as a director, he was initially entrusted with the management of Age-Group Cricket. By adding the Game Development chairmanship to his current responsibilities, Akbar now oversees the entire pipeline of talent, from grassroots identification to the preparation of future international stars.
| Official | Previous Role | New/Current Responsibility | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asif Akbar | Age-Group Cricket Head | Chairman, Game Development | Active |
| Ishtiaque Sadek | Chairman, Game Development | Director (pending resignation) | Resigned |
This administrative transition occurs against a backdrop of intense domestic competition. Currently, the cricket-loving nation is focused on the Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL), where four regional powerhouses are battling in the One-Day format. The Game Development wing is crucial during such periods, as it is responsible for monitoring player progress and ensuring that the structural integrity of the domestic game remains robust.
The appointment is seen as a strategic move to consolidate youth and development sectors under a single, energetic leadership. Insiders suggest that Akbar’s dual role will facilitate a more seamless transition for young players moving from age-level competitions into the high-performance and senior domestic circuits.
