A late controversy surrounding a ball condition change and subsequent penalty proved decisive as Karachi Kings edged past Lahore Qalandars in a tense Pakistan Super League encounter, despite a disciplined bowling display that featured an impressive spell from Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman.
Chasing a modest target of 129, Karachi required 14 runs from the final over with five wickets in hand. At that critical juncture, the match was briefly halted when both on-field umpires inspected the match ball. Following their assessment, the reserve umpire entered the field carrying a replacement ball, citing a change in condition. As a consequence, Lahore were penalised five runs, instantly altering the equation to 9 required from 6 deliveries.
The shift in circumstances proved pivotal. On the very first ball of the final over, Sikandar Raza produced a sharp catch at deep square leg to dismiss Khushdil Shah off Haris Rauf. However, any momentum Lahore hoped to build was quickly extinguished. The next delivery was called a wide, easing the pressure on the batting side. Abbas Afridi then delivered a decisive finish, striking a four and a six off consecutive deliveries to seal Karachi’s second successive victory, while handing Lahore their first defeat of the campaign.
Despite the dramatic conclusion, Lahore had earlier put up a spirited bowling performance in defence of their below-par total of 128 for 9. Their bowlers consistently applied pressure, restricting Karachi to 88 for 5 after 15 overs and keeping the chase finely balanced until the closing stages.
Mustafizur Rahman was once again highly economical. The left-arm Bangladesh pacer returned figures of 4 overs for 20 runs, claiming one wicket. His spell included a tight opening burst in the eighth over, where he conceded just a single run and dismissed Saad Baig via a catch behind the wicket. He maintained control through the middle overs, conceding only five runs in both his second and third spells before finishing with a slightly more expensive final over.
| Bowler | Overs | Runs Conceded | Wickets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abbas Afridi | 4 | 18 | 4 |
| Haris Rauf | 4 | ~35 | 1 |
| Mustafizur Rahman | 4 | 20 | 1 |
| Ubaid Shah | 3 | 11 | 0 |
| Usman Mir | 4 | 20 | 0 |
Earlier in the match, Lahore struggled to build substantial partnerships and were eventually restricted to 128 for 9 in their allotted overs. Abdullah Shafique top-scored with 33 off 24 deliveries, providing the only notable resistance in an otherwise stuttering innings. Bangladesh batter Parvez Hossain Emon, batting in the middle order, contributed 12 runs from 12 balls but was unable to accelerate the scoring.
In response, Karachi’s innings remained under control for long periods, particularly during the middle phase when Lahore’s bowlers tightened their grip. However, the combination of lower-order hitting and the controversial five-run penalty ultimately swung the contest decisively in Karachi’s favour, ensuring a dramatic finish to an otherwise closely fought match.
