After more than three months away from international cricket, Bangladesh is set to return to the field tomorrow with the opening One Day International (ODI) against Pakistan at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Having largely watched from the sidelines during the T20 World Cup, the Tigers are eager to re-establish themselves on home soil.

Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons described the upcoming series as “the starting point of our journey towards the 2027 50-over World Cup.” He emphasised that while the squad is focused on thorough preparation for the World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia next year, immediate progress in the ICC ODI rankings is equally vital to ensure direct qualification.

At a press conference in Mirpur ahead of the series, Simmons outlined the team’s objectives:

“Our primary aim is to climb the rankings, not just to secure an eighth-place finish for direct qualification. Ultimately, we want to move towards the top of the table. If we can be seventh or sixth at the end of the qualification period, that’s positive, but the overarching goal is to elevate the team’s standard of cricket as a whole.”

Currently, Bangladesh is ranked tenth in ODIs. To qualify directly for the 2027 World Cup, they must be among the top eight teams. Their first challenge in this campaign is Pakistan, who are fourth in the ODI rankings. Bangladesh, however, have a strong record against Pakistan at home: during Pakistan’s last visit in 2015, Bangladesh won the three-match series 3-0. Simmons stressed that while the history is encouraging, the opposition will be highly motivated:

“Pakistan will not accept another 3-0 defeat lightly. They will be looking to return strongly, and the pitches this series are expected to be excellent. This is why we are fully focused; this series marks the beginning of our pathway to the 2027 World Cup.”

The visiting Pakistan team, led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, includes six uncapped players. Simmons, however, remains unfazed:

“No Pakistani cricketer should be underestimated. Talent always emerges, and being new to the squad is never a disadvantage—players earn their place on merit.”

One tactical adjustment Simmons highlighted is positioning wicketkeeper-batsman Litton Das in the middle order. He explained:

“Keeping as an opener for a full 50-over game is extremely taxing. Litton is also one of our best against spin bowling. His experience in the middle order strengthens one of our previously weaker areas, and we expect him to provide crucial support there.”

All three ODIs will be held in Mirpur, offering Bangladesh an opportunity to combine home advantage with a strong performance to climb the rankings and build confidence for the global stage.
