The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially announced its 15-man squad for the opening two fixtures of the forthcoming T20 International series against New Zealand. In a selection strategy that prioritises both workload management and the integration of fresh talent, the national selectors have introduced a newcomer to the senior international stage whilst opting to rest several stalwarts of the pace attack.
The most notable inclusion is the 28-year-old pace-bowling all-rounder Abdul Gaffar Saqlain, who earns his maiden call-up to the national side. Saqlain’s ascent follows a string of impressive performances on the domestic circuit, where his ability to extract bounce and execute deceptive slower balls caught the eye of the selection panel. Furthermore, his reputation as a “power-hitter” in the lower-middle order provides the squad with much-needed tactical flexibility in the shortest format of the game.
The BCB has made a conscious decision to manage the physical toll on its primary fast bowlers. Consequently, the seasoned duo of Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed have been granted a period of recuperation. Additionally, the young express speedster Nahid Rana, whose recent performances have sparked significant media interest, has also been rested to ensure he remains peak-fit for future international commitments.
In their absence, Ripon Mondol returns to the fold. Mondol, who previously represented Bangladesh in three T20Is during the 2023 Asian Games, has been rewarded for his consistency in death-over bowling. The selectors believe his discipline under pressure will be vital against a formidable New Zealand batting line-up.
The team will once again be spearheaded by Litton Das, who retains his role as captain. There is also positive news regarding the fitness of Parvez Hossain Emon. Having recovered fully from an injury sustained during his stint in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Emon returns to bolster the top-order options.
| Player Name | Role | Strategic Note |
| Litton Das | Captain / Opening Batter | Retains leadership for the series. |
| Saif Hassan | Vice-Captain / All-rounder | Provides senior support to the skipper. |
| Abdul Gaffar Saqlain | Pace All-rounder | Maiden call-up; domestic standout. |
| Ripon Mondol | Right-arm Seamer | Recalled for death-bowling expertise. |
| Parvez Hossain Emon | Opening Batter | Returns following PSL injury recovery. |
| Shoriful Islam | Left-arm Seamer | Leads the attack in the absence of Taskin. |
The three-match series is scheduled to commence in late April, with the first two encounters taking place in the port city of Chittagong. The third and final match will see the action move to the nation’s premier cricket ground in the capital.
1st T20I: 27 April at the Bir Shrestha Matiur Rahman Stadium, Chittagong.
2nd T20I: 29 April at the Bir Shrestha Matiur Rahman Stadium, Chittagong.
3rd T20I: 02 May at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mirpur.
The selection committee has curated a balanced side featuring a mix of aggressive stroke-makers and a diverse spin department consisting of Nasum Ahmed, Sheikh Mahedi Hasan, and the leg-spin threat of Rishad হোসেন.
Bangladesh Squad (First Two T20Is):
Litton Das (Captain), Saif Hassan (Vice-Captain), Parvez Hossain Emon, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Shamim Patwari, Towhid Hridoy, Nurul Hasan Sohan, Sheikh Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Rishad Hossain, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Ripon Mondol, Mohammad Saifuddin, and Abdul Gaffar Saqlain.
As the 2026 cricket season gathers momentum, this series represents a crucial opportunity for the fringe players to cement their positions ahead of upcoming global tournaments. For Abdul Gaffar Saqlain, it is a dream realised, whilst for the BCB, it is a test of the nation’s “bench strength” against one of the world’s most consistent T20 sides.
