The Bangladesh national women’s kabaddi team has secured a place in the semi-finals of the Asian Beach Games currently being held in Sanya, China, thereby guaranteeing the nation at least a bronze medal. Following an impressive opening performance against Thailand, the squad continued their dominant form on Saturday by defeating Chinese Taipei with a substantial points margin in their second group-stage fixture.
The victory marks a significant milestone for the “Red and Green” representatives, as the tournament regulations stipulate that all semi-finalists are assured of a podium finish. Bangladesh’s clinical execution in their opening matches has established them as primary contenders for the gold medal as the competition progresses.
From the initial whistle, the Bangladesh women’s team exerted immense pressure on the Chinese Taipei side, demonstrating superior physical conditioning and tactical coordination. The first half was characterised by swift raids and a robust defensive line that prevented the opposition from mounting any significant counter-attacks. By the conclusion of the first period, Bangladesh held a commanding lead of 25–11.
The second half saw an even more aggressive approach from the Bangladeshi athletes. They systematically dismantled the Chinese Taipei defensive formation, securing a rapid succession of points through successful raids and “lona” points (awarded when an entire team is put out). The match concluded with a decisive scoreline of 59–20, reflecting a margin of 39 points.
This victory follows an equally impressive performance in their inaugural match against Thailand, where Bangladesh secured a 51–34 win. These consecutive high-scoring victories have propelled the team to the top of their group rankings, significantly bolstering the squad’s morale ahead of the knockout stages.
Having successfully navigated their first two hurdles, the Bangladesh women’s team will now focus on securing the top position in their group. Their final group-stage encounter is scheduled for tomorrow against Nepal. This fixture will determine the group champion and influence the seeding for the semi-final brackets.
Under the Asian Beach Games kabaddi format, the top two teams from each group advance to the semi-finals. As there is no third-place play-off in this specific discipline, both losing semi-finalists are traditionally awarded bronze medals. Consequently, by virtue of qualifying for the final four, Bangladesh has formalised its presence on the medal tally.
In contrast to the success of the women’s team, the Bangladesh men’s national beach kabaddi team has faced a challenging campaign in Sanya. The men’s squad suffered their second consecutive defeat on Saturday, effectively complicating their path to the medal rounds.
Following an initial loss to Pakistan, the men’s team faced Iran, a perennial powerhouse in the sport. Despite a spirited effort, the Bangladesh men were unable to overcome the Iranian tactical discipline, ultimately losing the match with a score of 47–31. To remain in contention for further stages, the men’s team will require a significant shift in performance and favourable results in their remaining fixtures, though their prospects for a medal have diminished following these successive setbacks.
The contrasting fortunes of the two squads highlight the rising prominence of the women’s kabaddi programme in Bangladesh, which has seen increased investment and competitive exposure in recent years. The focus now remains on the women’s upcoming match against Nepal as they aim to upgrade their guaranteed bronze to silver or gold.
