Brazil’s campaign to achieve a historic sixth World Cup title has commenced with a tactical complication that invokes an unwelcome statistical record for the South American side. The five-time world champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco in their opening Group C fixture. Although the Seleção conceded the opening goal, they managed to restore parity through a strike from Vinícius Júnior. Despite controlling long stretches of play thereafter, they failed to secure a winning goal.
This result represents only the fourth time in World Cup history that Brazil have been denied a victory in their opening group-stage match. Crucially, football records reveal that the South American nation has never gone on to lift the World Cup trophy after failing to win their debut fixture of the tournament.
Prior to the current tournament, Brazil had started their World Cup campaigns with a draw on three separate occasions, with each instance resulting in an ultimate failure to win the competition.
The first occurrence took place at the 1974 World Cup in West Germany. Arriving as the defending champions, Brazil played out a 0-0 draw against Yugoslavia in Frankfurt. Their tournament subsequently lost momentum in the second group stage, and they eventually finished in fourth place.
Four years later, at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, Brazil repeated this pattern by drawing 1-1 with Sweden in Mar del Plata. Despite finishing the tournament without losing a single match, they were compromised by the initial dropped points and finished third overall.
The most recent precedent occurred at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Switzerland held the Seleção to a 1-1 draw in Rostov-on-Don. Although Brazil recovered to qualify for the knockout rounds, their campaign was brought to an abrupt end in the quarter-finals following a 2-1 defeat by Belgium.
The 1-1 draw leaves Brazil under immediate pressure in Group C, particularly after Scotland secured a 1-0 victory over Haiti in the group’s corresponding fixture. Scotland now lead the standings with three points, whilst Brazil and Morocco sit level in second place. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti must now prepare his team for their second group fixture against Haiti on 20 June, knowing they must overcome a persistent historical trend to achieve ultimate success.
