The Confederation of African Football’s (Confederation of African Football) Secretary General, Véron Mosengo-Omba, has resigned from his post amid escalating controversy surrounding African football governance and the fallout from a disputed Africa Cup of Nations decision.
His departure comes at a time of growing instability within the organisation, with increasing scrutiny over leadership accountability, procedural transparency, and disciplinary rulings that have sparked widespread debate across the continent.
Mosengo-Omba stated that his decision to step down was voluntary and motivated by a desire to focus on personal and professional projects after more than three decades in international football administration. However, his exit follows mounting criticism over both his tenure and the broader credibility crisis facing CAF.
In recent months, Mosengo-Omba had faced sustained calls for his removal. Critics highlighted that he remained in office beyond the mandatory retirement age of 63, raising governance concerns within the organisation. Social media discourse and internal dissatisfaction among members of CAF’s Executive Committee further intensified the pressure.
The controversy was significantly amplified by a disputed ruling in the latest Africa Cup of Nations (Africa Cup of Nations), which triggered widespread backlash. The decision to alter the outcome of a final involving Senegal and Morocco provoked strong reactions from fans, officials, and stakeholders across African football.
In his resignation statement, Mosengo-Omba reflected on his long career in global sport, claiming he had worked to “unite people, educate, and open new horizons of expectation.” He emphasised that he now intends to dedicate his time to personal initiatives.
He also alluded to the criticism he had faced, suggesting that doubts raised against him had been addressed. According to him, his departure marks a moment of closure, allowing him to step away “without obstruction” and leave behind what he described as a strengthened CAF.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe has stated that the organisation will fully respect and implement any ruling issued by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Court of Arbitration for Sport) regarding the ongoing dispute. He stressed that personal opinions are irrelevant in the face of binding judicial outcomes.
The legal case stems from the AFCON final, where Senegal initially suffered a controversial outcome against Morocco. Following disciplinary proceedings, CAF’s Appeals Board awarded the title to Morocco after Senegal’s team had reportedly walked off the pitch in protest against refereeing decisions. Senegal has since appealed the ruling to CAS, where the matter remains under review.

Observers believe Mosengo-Omba’s resignation reflects deeper structural tensions within African football governance. The combination of disciplinary disputes, leadership concerns, and ongoing legal challenges has intensified calls for reform within CAF.
Analysts argue that the organisation now faces a critical moment, as it seeks to restore credibility, strengthen institutional transparency, and rebuild trust among member associations and supporters across the continent.
