LONDON — Chelsea Football Club’s interim manager, Callum McFarlane, has confirmed that Brazilian winger Estêvão will miss the remainder of the 2025/26 domestic season. The injury has also cast significant doubt over the player’s availability for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, according to official club statements released on Friday, 24 April 2026.
The 19-year-old winger sustained a significant hamstring injury during Chelsea’s 1-0 Premier League defeat against Manchester United last week. Medical assessments conducted at the club’s Cobham training facility have since determined that the severity of the muscle tear necessitates a prolonged period of rehabilitation, precluding any competitive involvement for the final weeks of the campaign.
The announcement came during a pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final fixture against Leeds United, scheduled for Sunday. The loss of Estêvão is viewed as a major tactical setback for the London club as they navigate the concluding stages of both domestic and European competitions.
The update was provided by Callum McFarlane, who assumed the role of interim manager earlier this week following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior. Discussing the medical report, McFarlane expressed the gravity of the situation regarding the player’s immediate future on the pitch.
“Unfortunately, Estêvão will not play for us again this season. He is going to be out for a significant period of time,” McFarlane stated to the gathered press.
Estêvão, who joined Chelsea amidst high expectations, has been a key component of the club’s attacking frontline throughout the season. His absence leaves the squad thin in wide positions as they prepare for the high-stakes encounter at Wembley Stadium against Leeds United.
The timing of the injury is particularly detrimental given the proximity of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. As a rising star in the Brazilian national setup, Estêvão was widely expected to be a core member of the Seleção squad.
When questioned by journalists regarding whether the winger would recover in time to represent Brazil on the global stage, McFarlane remained non-committal, citing the early stages of the recovery process.
“To be honest, I am not sure about that. I only know that he will not play for us again. So, I am sure he will be very hopeful of playing in the World Cup, but I don’t know about that,” the interim manager remarked.
The recovery timeline for high-grade hamstring injuries typically spans several months, involving intensive physiotherapy and a phased return to full-intensity training. Given that the World Cup is set to commence in mid-June 2026, the player faces a race against time to regain match fitness before the final squad registrations are submitted to FIFA.
Estêvão’s journey to the Premier League was marked by a highly publicised transfer from Palmeiras. Although the agreement was formalised in 2024, the player officially joined Chelsea upon turning 18 in 2025. During the 2025/26 season, he has been noted for his dribbling efficacy and goal contributions, making him a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) medical staff are expected to liaise with Chelsea’s doctors to monitor the teenager’s progress. For Brazil, the potential loss of such a dynamic young talent would necessitate a tactical shift in their offensive planning for the tournament. Chelsea, meanwhile, must now look to internal alternatives to fill the void left by their leading young winger for the remainder of the term.
