Chelsea Football Club’s current trajectory in the English Premier League has reached a historical nadir following a series of dismal performances. Once contenders for a top-four finish and UEFA Champions League qualification, the West London side is now struggling to secure a single point, or indeed, a single goal. The club’s recent 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion has cemented a period of failure not witnessed at Stamford Bridge for over a century.
The loss to Brighton marks the first time since 1912—exactly 114 years ago—that Chelsea have lost five consecutive league matches without scoring a single goal. While the inability to find the back of the net mirrors a pre-World War I era, the losing streak itself is the club’s worst since 1993. This statistical decline has placed immense pressure on manager Liam Rosenior, whose tenure is increasingly scrutinised as the “Blues” continue to descend the league table.
The club’s recent decline began on 14 March with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United. This initiated a sequence of losses where Chelsea failed to provide any offensive response.

Following 34 matches, Chelsea currently sit in seventh position with 48 points. However, their grip on a top-seven finish is tenuous. The five teams immediately below Chelsea in the standings all possess a game in hand. Should those competitors capitalise on their fixtures, Chelsea face the mathematical probability of dropping into the bottom half of the top ten.
The club’s form across all competitions is equally concerning, with seven losses in their last eight outings. Their solitary victory during this period came in the FA Cup quarter-finals against Port Vale, a side competing in League One, the third tier of English football. In the Premier League specifically, Chelsea have collected only five points from their last nine matches; only Tottenham Hotspur, with two points in the same timeframe, have performed worse.
Defensive instability, particularly regarding set-pieces, has plagued the squad. Chelsea have conceded 11 goals from corner kicks this season, equalling a club record set in the 1994-95 season. Only West Ham United, with 15 goals conceded from corners, have a poorer record in this specific metric.
Manager Liam Rosenior did not offer excuses following the Brighton defeat, describing the performance as “unacceptable” and “unjustifiable.” For the first time during his tenure, Rosenior was subjected to audible booing from the travelling supporters.
“In every aspect of the game, this performance was unacceptable,” Rosenior stated post-match. “Our mentality was not good enough. I have frequently stood up for these players, but today is unjustifiable. The way we conceded, the lost duels, and the lack of intensity—big changes are required immediately. The players must look at themselves and evaluate what they are giving to this club.”
