Police have arrested Russell Mia, 27, president of the Chhatra League unit in Chunargat Upazila of Habiganj, in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
He was arrested from the Aiton-Syedabad area of Chunargat at around 1.45am on Tuesday, following an operation based on information received by police.
According to police sources, a team from Chunargat Police Station conducted a raid in the Syedabad area after receiving confidential information about Russell’s whereabouts. Officers detained him during the operation and subsequently showed him as arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Chunargat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Saiful Islam confirmed the arrest. He said Russell was taken into custody in connection with an Anti-Terrorism Act case filed on the night of 14 August.
The police officer also said that several other cases have been filed against Russell at Chunargat Police Station. According to the police, his arrest was made amid concerns that the local law and order situation could deteriorate, with the authorities citing public safety and the need to maintain stability as reasons for taking him into custody.
The arrest comes against a backdrop of heightened attention to law and order in the area. In such cases, police investigations generally focus on establishing the circumstances surrounding the alleged offences and determining the involvement of individual suspects based on available evidence.
Police said legal proceedings against Russell were under way following his arrest. The authorities are expected to take further action in accordance with the relevant legal procedures.
An arrest, however, does not by itself establish guilt. Any allegations against the accused will have to be examined through the due legal process, with the courts ultimately determining the outcome of the case.
The latest development has drawn attention locally because of Russell’s position as the head of the Chunargat Upazila Chhatra League unit and the number of cases police say are pending against him. Authorities have indicated that maintaining public order remains a priority as the legal process moves forward.
