Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court has ordered the full acquittal of professional cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife, Tamima Sultana Tammi, in a high-profile case surrounding the legal validity of their marriage. The verdict was delivered at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, 10 June 2026, by Magistrate Joshita Islam. Ashutosh Bhowmik, a bench assistant attached to the court, confirmed the judicial decision to the press.
Following the announcement, Ishrat Hasan, the legal counsel representing the prosecution, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the court’s findings. Speaking to journalists outside the courtroom, she announced that the plaintiff intends to contest the ruling by lodging an official appeal in a higher court.
The legal proceedings were originally initiated by Rakib Hossain, the former husband of Tamima Sultana. According to the case documents, Rakib Hossain married Tamima on 26 February 2011, and the couple share a daughter. The core accusation in the lawsuit asserted that Tamima entered into a new marriage with cricketer Nasir Hossain before her previous marriage had been legally dissolved under existing statutory frameworks.
The issue initially drew widespread public attention in February 2021, when photographs of the wedding ceremony between Nasir and Tamima were widely circulated across social media platforms. Shortly thereafter, on 24 February 2021, Rakib Hossain filed a formal complaint with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka. From the onset of the controversy, Nasir Hossain and Tamima Sultana consistently denied the allegations, maintaining that their union was completely lawful and took place only after the prior matrimonial relationship had been legally terminated in strict accordance with the law.
Following a formal inquiry, the designated investigating officer, Sheikh Mizanur Rahman, submitted the official police investigation report to the court on 30 September 2021. The report initially indicted three individuals: Nasir Hossain, Tamima Sultana Tammi, and Tamima’s mother, Sumi Akhter.
On 9 February 2022, the court framed formal charges against Nasir and Tamima, ordering the commencement of their trial, while simultaneously exempting Sumi Akhter from the lawsuit. The defendants filed a revision petition against the indictment, which was subsequently dismissed by the court on 28 February 2023.
The formal recording of depositions began on 20 March 2023, during which a total of ten prosecution witnesses testified before the court. The witness deposition phase concluded on 16 April 2025. In March 2026, the court conducted a self-defence hearing for the accused, during which Tamima provided testimony in her own defence. Following the conclusion of closing arguments from both legal teams on 6 May 2026, the court scheduled the final verdict for 10 June 2026.
During the closing arguments, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Ishrat Hasan, argued that the evidence presented had firmly established the charges and demanded statutory punishment for the accused. Conversely, Advocate Azizur Rahman Dulu, representing Nasir Hossain, and Advocate Mosleh Uddin Jasim, representing Tamima Sultana, rejected the allegations in their entirety and pleaded for a full acquittal.
After reviewing the extensive testimonies and evidence submitted over the multi-year trial, the court ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt, resulting in the full acquittal of Nasir Hossain and Tamima Sultana.
