A 75-year-old man was killed after being struck by a pickup van while crossing the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in Mirsarai Upazila of Chattogram on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Md Mujibul Haque (75), son of the late Abdul Haque of the Mirzapara area in West Khaiyachhara village under Khaiyachhara Union. The accident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on the section of the highway in front of his residence.
According to highway police and members of the victim’s family, Mujibul Haque had left his home and was attempting to cross the highway when the incident took place. While crossing the lane carrying traffic towards Dhaka, he was struck by a pickup van. The impact proved fatal, and he died at the scene.
Following the accident, highway police were informed and arrived at the location to recover the body. Authorities subsequently initiated the required legal procedures.

The victim’s youngest son, Mohammad Alauddin, said that his father had worked for the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) during his professional career and had been living at home since retirement. According to Alauddin, his father had left the house for a walk shortly before the accident occurred.
Alauddin further stated that the family had submitted an application to the highway police requesting the release of the body without a post-mortem examination.
Speaking on the matter, Md Sharifuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Jorarganj Highway Police Station, confirmed that the family had applied to receive the body without an autopsy. He said that the body would be handed over to relatives after completion of the necessary legal formalities.
The officer also noted that the driver fled the scene with the pickup van immediately after the collision. Police are currently attempting to identify and seize the vehicle involved in the accident.
The incident adds to concerns over road safety on the busy Dhaka–Chattogram Highway, one of Bangladesh’s most important transport corridors, where pedestrian crossings often pose significant risks. However, in this case, police have so far confirmed only the circumstances surrounding the collision and the ongoing efforts to locate the vehicle and driver involved.
Authorities have not yet announced any arrests or further developments regarding the investigation.
