Two separate fires erupted in Dhaka on Thursday night—one in a multi-storey residential building in Moghbazar and another in a cluster of makeshift shanties near the Tejgaon railway gate. Despite the alarming nature of the incidents, no injuries or casualties were reported, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Rakibul Hasan, the duty officer at the Fire Service control room, stated that the first fire was reported shortly after 9:15 p.m. in a room on the eighth floor of a residential building on Dilu Road, Moghbazar. Two firefighting units were deployed promptly and managed to bring the blaze under control before it could spread to adjacent flats. Initial investigations indicate that the fire was triggered by an electrical malfunction, a recurring cause of fires in many older residential structures across the capital. Residents were safely evacuated or moved to secure areas, preventing any harm.
Earlier that evening, at approximately 8:45 p.m., another fire broke out in a line of shanties situated along the Tejgaon railway tracks. The area, known for its dense, informal settlements, posed the risk of rapid fire spread. Firefighters responded with two units, successfully containing the flames before they could engulf a wider section of the settlement. Several shanties were burnt down, leaving property damage but no casualties.
These back-to-back incidents highlight persistent concerns about electrical safety in residential buildings, as well as the vulnerability of informal settlements that lack proper infrastructure and fire-prevention facilities. Authorities have once again urged residents and community leaders to undertake routine electrical inspections, improve wiring systems, and ensure better safety preparedness to reduce future risks.
