An inheritance dispute among the children of a deceased man’s four wives led to a major confrontation over the selection of his burial plot, bringing the funeral procedures to a complete standstill for several hours. The incident, which involved successive verbal altercations and physical scuffles, resulted in two separate graves being excavated in different locations before local authorities intervened. The family conflict took place at the residence of the deceased individual in Char Fasson upazila, located within the Bhola district.
The deceased individual, identified as Jalil Pandit, passed away on Friday night, 19 June 2026. The subsequent familial dispute erupted on Saturday morning, 20 June 2026, at the Jalil Pandit homestead situated in Ward No. 3 of Rasulpur Union, under the administrative jurisdiction of the Shashibhushan Police Station.
According to accounts verified by local residents and community elders, Jalil Pandit had married four times during his lifetime. At the time of his demise, he was survived by two wives and a total of seven children. The root of the prolonged domestic friction stemmed from a property transition executed by Jalil Pandit prior to his death. He had legally transferred a substantial portion of his real estate assets to Khadija Akhter Smriti, a daughter from his youngest marriage, by executing an official deed of inheritance.
This specific distribution of wealth generated intense dissatisfaction and severe animosity among his other children from the alternative marriages. The structural distribution of the estate remained an active source of family tension for a prolonged period, which escalated immediately into an overt crisis following the patriarch’s death on Friday night. The structural disagreements over property rights directly manifested as absolute objections to the positioning of his final resting place.
On Saturday morning, family members initially excavated a grave inside the designated ancestral family cemetery. However, a faction of the remaining siblings immediately intervened, placing physical blockades to prevent the interment from proceeding at that location. As the domestic situation became increasingly complicated, neutral family members attempted a structural alternative by excavating a second grave directly within the residential courtyard of the homestead.
This alternative measure failed to mitigate the crisis, as the opposing faction issued strict formal objections against the courtyard location as well. With the body of Jalil Pandit left exposed in the residential courtyard, a fierce verbal argument broke out between Khadija Akhter Smriti and her various step-siblings. The intense psychological environment deteriorated rapidly, transitioning from verbal attacks into direct physical pushing, shoving, and hand-to-hand altercations in front of the gathered community.
Upon receiving urgent notifications regarding the civil disorder and escalating tensions at the homestead, a law enforcement deployment unit from the Shashibhushan Police Station was dispatched to the scene. Operating in tandem with elected local government representatives and community leaders, the police personnel managed to separate the fighting factions and establish physical security.
The joint mediation team initiated direct negotiations, seating both opposing factions to establish a temporary truce to facilitate the human rights of the deceased. Following extensive deliberations, an agreement was reached between the step-siblings, effectively resolving the standoff regarding the immediate funeral requirements.
Confirming the details, the daughter of the deceased, Khadija Akhter Smriti, stated that land and property disputes had created significant differences among the siblings, which directly caused the complex complications surrounding her father’s burial. She noted that the body was finally interred once an administrative solution was reached.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Shashibhushan Police Station, Md. Firoz Ahammad, verified the event, stating that police units were deployed immediately upon receiving reports of a domestic dispute regarding the burial site. The Officer-in-Charge confirmed that the situation was successfully pacified with the direct assistance of local public representatives. Following the conclusion of the mediation process, the Janazah (funeral prayers) was conducted in the courtyard, and the body of Jalil Pandit was officially buried at approximately 12:00 PM.
