The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has officially announced a comprehensive seven-day ban on the movement of trucks, covered vans, and lorries across major highways. This regulatory restriction will remain in force from 25 May to 31 May 2026. The administrative decision has been enacted to guarantee traffic discipline, minimize congestion, and ensure the overall safety of holidaymakers travelling during the upcoming festive period of Eid-ul-Adha.
The institutional directive was formalized on Monday morning, 18 May 2026, during a specialized briefing on road safety held at the conference room of the CMP Headquarters in Dampara, Chittagong. The high-level meeting brought together law enforcement executives and transport sector stakeholders to coordinate logistics ahead of the national holiday sequence.
Presiding over the conference, the CMP Commissioner, Hasan Mohammad Shawkat Ali, emphasized that the police administration would maintain zero tolerance towards traffic violations. The commissioner stated that rigorous legal measures would be executed against transport operators found guilty of charging exorbitant fares, operating vehicles without valid fitness certificates, or deploying drivers who do not possess official driving licenses.
The assembly approved a blanket suspension on heavy commercial cargo transport for a total of seven days, spanning the periods immediately preceding and following the festival. However, to prevent supply chain disruptions, the CMP specified clear exemptions to this traffic rule. The restriction will not apply to vehicles transporting sacrificial animals, essential emergency commodities, medicines, medical supplies, fuel, and port-bound export-import freight.
To facilitate passenger safety and structured traffic flow, the metropolitan police will establish a heightened surveillance framework. The CMP will deploy specialized traffic personnel to enforce strict traffic management protocols at critical arterial nodes across the city. The designated high-priority junctions include:
Dampara
Alankar Crossing
A.K. Khan Intersection
Export Processing Zone (EPZ) Area
Chittagong Port Precincts
Katgarh
Oxygen Crossing
Bahaddarhat
Shah Amanat Bridge Approach
Kadamtali Terminus
The law enforcement agency has also committed to preventing hazardous travel practices that frequently occur during festive seasons. The authorities resolved to completely halt the operation of dilapidated or unroadworthy vehicles within the metropolitan boundaries. Furthermore, police units stationed at various entry and exit points of the city have been instructed to intercept any commercial goods vehicles attempting to transport passengers on open cargo beds. Traffic divisions will also utilize speed-monitoring equipment to strictly enforce the statutory speed limits across the highway network.
The specialized road safety meeting was attended by senior ranks of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police establishment alongside external transport representatives. Notable attendees included the Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) who additionally holds the portfolio for Administration and Finance, Wahidul Haque Chowdhury, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Nesar Uddin Ahmed.
Other senior policing officials present at the policy formulation included Nishkriti Chakma, Mohammad Liaqat Ali Khan, Mohammad Rais Uddin, Kabir Ahmed, Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, and Mohammad Amirul Islam. These officials will oversee the field-level execution of the traffic plan within their respective jurisdictions to maintain absolute order on the roads during the scheduled seven-day enforcement window.
