The Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) has conducted inspection operations at nine insurance companies across the country. The regulatory action follows allegations that these firms continued to pay commissions under various sectors despite a suspension on individual agency activities.
The regulator disclosed the information via an official press release issued on Tuesday, 16 June. The initiative aims to ensure compliance with existing statutory provisions and maintain market discipline.
According to the IDRA, individual agency operations within non-life insurance companies were officially suspended from 1 January this year. This suspension was executed following an application by the Bangladesh Insurance Association (BIA) and with the unanimous consent of the non-life insurance firms.
Despite the implementation of this directive, allegations emerged that certain companies continued to disburse commissions to secure business volumes. These disbursements were reportedly masked under various accounts, including salaries, allowances, and “no-claim bonuses”.
Industry stakeholders noted that such practices foster an environment of unhealthy competition within the insurance market. Furthermore, these actions impede the execution of regulatory directives, threatening corporate governance and equity across the sector.
To verify the validity of these allegations and assess compliance with statutory rules, the IDRA constituted three dedicated inspection committees. Prior to the field operations, the regulator issued a formal directive on 4 June, instructing the formation of separate teams to inspect the entities under scrutiny.
The inspection operations encompass a total of nine insurance providers. The companies subjected to the regulatory review are classified in the table below:
| No. | Name of the Insurance Institution | Sector Classification |
| 1 | Pragati Insurance PLC | Non-Life Insurance |
| 2 | Paramount Insurance PLC | Non-Life Insurance |
| 3 | Bangladesh National Insurance Company Limited | Non-Life Insurance |
| 4 | Crystal Insurance PLC | Non-Life Insurance |
| 5 | Asia Pacific General Insurance PLC | Non-Life Insurance |
| 6 | Union Insurance Company Limited | Non-Life Insurance |
| 7 | Global Insurance PLC | Non-Life Insurance |
| 8 | Karaphuli Insurance Company Limited | Non-Life Insurance |
| 9 | Prime Islami Life Insurance PLC | Life Insurance |
The IDRA has confirmed that the comprehensive findings gathered during these visits will be formally compiled and submitted to its dedicated Vigilance Team. Should the investigations yield definitive proof of financial or procedural irregularities, necessary punitive measures will be initiated in strict accordance with existing insurance laws and regulations.
Commenting on the ongoing regulatory process, Mohammad Abu Bakr Siddique, an IDRA Member specialising in Non-Life Insurance, stated that the authenticity of the allegations would be thoroughly evaluated based on the compiled inspection reports. He added that if any non-compliance or systemic irregularities are substantiated, the authority will take appropriate legal action against the offending institutions.
