Bangladeshi model and actress Tanzia Zaman Methila has proudly carried her nation’s flag on the global stage at the 74th Miss Universe pageant, one of the world’s most prestigious beauty competitions. Currently representing Bangladesh in Thailand, Methila has found herself at the centre of a heated online debate over her outfits during the event.
In a heartfelt video message shared on social media, Methila expressed deep frustration and disappointment at the criticism she has received from her own countrymen, particularly regarding her participation in the swimsuit segment of the competition.
Speaking candidly, she said: “If people from other countries troll me, it doesn’t bother me. But it hurts when my own people criticise me. They can see how hard I’m working — the discipline, the training, the effort that goes into preparing for a competition of this scale. When, after all that, I don’t receive appreciation from my own country, it’s truly painful.”
Addressing the controversy over wearing a bikini, Methila stated, “How many times must I explain this? If I don’t wear a bikini, I can’t even reach the Top 30. You want me to win — and to win, I have to wear it. This has nothing to do with religion; this is about representing Bangladesh successfully in an international competition.”
Methila went on to highlight the level of professionalism and dedication required to compete in Miss Universe: “This is a huge platform with contestants from all over the world, and every one of them is exceptional. To compete with them, I must give my absolute best — and for that, I need the support of my country’s people.”
The model’s emotional appeal has sparked renewed discussion online about the cultural expectations placed on beauty pageant contestants and the challenges faced by women representing conservative nations on international stages. Many have since voiced support for Methila, commending her courage and determination to represent Bangladesh with pride and professionalism.
