New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has officially announced a dynamic squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of Bangladesh, headlined by the return of three key fast bowlers. After enduring lengthy spells on the sidelines due to various fitness concerns, Matt Fisher, Will O’Rourke, and Blair Tickner have successfully completed their rehabilitation to reclaim their spots in the national side.
The Black Caps are set to arrive in Bangladesh on 13 April to compete in a six-match series consisting of three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 Internationals. In the absence of regular captain Mitchell Santner, who is unavailable due to his Indian Premier League (IPL) commitments with the Mumbai Indians, the veteran Tom Latham will take the reins as captain for both formats.
The return of the pace trio provides a significant boost to New Zealand’s bowling stocks. Will O’Rourke returns to the ODI fold after recovering from a persistent back injury, while Matt Fisher has been named in the T20 squad following a successful recovery from a shin injury. Blair Tickner, having overcome a troublesome ankle issue, has been selected for both the ODI and T20 squads, offering versatility across the formats.
Head coach Rob Walter expressed his delight at having the experienced seamers back in the mix:
"Will, Blair, and Matt have worked incredibly hard over the past few months to get back to full fitness. In the modern era of constant cricket, maintaining depth in our bowling stocks is vital. Having players of their calibre available again is fantastic news for the team."
The selection committee has also rewarded domestic performances and recent "A" team successes. Off-spinning all-rounder Dean Foxcroft makes a return to the white-ball setup after a two-year hiatus. His inclusion follows a stellar campaign in the Ford Trophy, where he finished as the fourth-highest run-scorer for the Central Stags.
Furthermore, several youngsters who impressed during New Zealand ‘A’s recent tour of Sri Lanka—including Muhammad Abbas, Aditya Ashok, Kristian Clarke, and Ben Sears—have been integrated into the senior squads. Kristian Clarke, in particular, remains a player to watch; he rose to prominence last January during a historic series win against India, where he claimed seven wickets in three matches, including the prized scalps of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
| Feature | ODI Squad | T20I Squad |
|---|---|---|
| Captain | Tom Latham | Tom Latham |
| Key Batters | Henry Nicholls, Will Young | Tim Robinson, Katene Clarke |
| Wicket-keepers | Dane Cleaver | Dane Cleaver |
| All-rounders | Dean Foxcroft, Josh Clarkson | Dean Foxcroft, Josh Clarkson |
| Returning Pacers | Will O’Rourke, Blair Tickner | Matt Fisher, Blair Tickner |
| Spin Options | Aditya Ashok, Jayden Lennox | Ish Sodhi, Jayden Lennox |
| Emerging Talent | Muhammad Abbas, Kristian Clarke | Bevan Jacobs, Nick Kelly |
The tour represents a strategic opportunity for New Zealand to test their bench strength in the challenging, spin-friendly conditions of the subcontinent. While the absence of Mitchell Santner and other IPL-bound stars might seem a disadvantage, the inclusion of seasoned campaigners like Ish Sodhi (T20I) and Henry Nicholls (ODI) provides the necessary stability to support the influx of young talent.
With three matches in each format, the series will be a crucial litmus test for the returning pacers to prove their match fitness and for the debutants to stake a permanent claim in the national side ahead of future ICC events.
