A devastating road accident in Netrokona has claimed the lives of a mother and her two daughters after a head-on collision between a passenger bus and an auto-rickshaw. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday afternoon along the Mymensingh–Netrokona highway near the Challisha Bypass area, leaving a local community in mourning and raising fresh concerns about road safety on one of the region’s busiest transport corridors.
The victims were identified as Nurjahan Begum, 33, and her two daughters, Smriti Akter, 16, and Iti Akter, 10. The family hailed from Amli Keshabpur village in Rauha Union of Netrokona Sadar Upazila. Nurjahan was the wife of Ainul Haque, a resident of the same village.
According to police officials and eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when an auto-rickshaw travelling towards Challisha from Netrokona town collided head-on with a Mahua Paribahan passenger bus that had departed from Mymensingh. The impact was severe, causing extensive damage to the smaller vehicle, which was reportedly crushed and twisted by the force of the collision.
Smriti Akter died at the scene due to the severity of her injuries. Rescue efforts were launched immediately by local residents and passers-by, who rushed to assist the victims. Nurjahan Begum and her younger daughter Iti Akter were recovered in critical condition and transported to Netrokona Sadar Hospital. Despite emergency medical treatment, both later succumbed to their injuries.
Three other passengers were also injured in the crash. Local people rescued them from the wreckage and arranged their transfer to the same hospital for treatment. Authorities said their identities were not immediately available, and updates on their medical conditions were still being awaited.
