Mymensingh Medical College (MMC) has ordered the immediate closure of its student hostels and suspended all academic activities following violent confrontations between two groups of students. The decision, which includes the postponement of all classes and examinations across all year groups, was officially confirmed on Saturday afternoon, 18 April 2026, by the college Principal, Dr Nazrul Islam Khan.
The unrest reportedly originated from a trivial dispute on Friday afternoon. According to institutional sources, two students were engaged in a conversation at a local tea stall near the campus. The discussion, centred on a specific social media post on Facebook, rapidly escalated into a heated verbal altercation. This individual disagreement subsequently turned physical, leading to a direct scuffle between the two individuals.
As news of the physical altercation spread among their respective peers, the situation deteriorated into a broader conflict. Supporters of both students organised into two factions, leading to a large-scale clash on the campus premises. Law enforcement agencies were summoned to the scene and successfully intervened to bring the volatile situation under control.
The violence resulted in significant injuries to several participants. Two students, identified as Mir Hamidul and Mu. Muaz, sustained severe injuries during the encounter. They were initially rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) for emergency treatment.
However, due to the critical nature of the injuries sustained by one of the victims, medical professionals deemed it necessary to transfer the student to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced clinical care. The condition of the student remains a primary concern for the college administration.
In response to the breakdown of discipline, the college administration convened an emergency meeting. Principal Dr Nazrul Islam Khan announced that the student hostels would remain closed for a minimum of one week to prevent further escalation. All students have been directed to vacate the premises accordingly.
To ensure a thorough investigation into the breach of conduct, a three-member probe committee has been formally established. This committee is tasked with identifying the instigators of the violence and submitting a factual report to the academic council.
