In preparation for the 13th National Parliamentary Elections, Nipun Roy Choudhury, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) nominee for a reserved women’s seat, has submitted her financial affidavit to the Election Commission. The document reveals a significant accumulation of wealth, specifically in the form of gold and movable assets. As the General Secretary of the Dhaka District BNP and a practicing lawyer, her financial disclosures provide a detailed look into the economic standing of one of the party’s prominent female leaders.
A primary highlight of the affidavit is the disclosure of jewellery. Nipun Roy Choudhury reported possessing 502 bhoris (approximately 5.85 kg) of gold and ornaments made of other precious metals. Additionally, her husband, Amitabh Roy, is recorded as owning 100 bhoris of similar jewellery.
Interestingly, the affidavit does not assign a specific monetary value to these holdings. The candidate stated that the acquisition cost of the jewellery remains unknown, as the items were primarily received as gifts. In the context of the current bullion market in Bangladesh, such a volume of gold represents a substantial undeclared valuation.
Nipun Roy Choudhury identifies her primary profession as a legal practitioner. From her legal practice, she generates an annual income of Tk 26 lakh. Her earnings are further supplemented by investments; she earns approximately Tk 4.5 lakh annually from shares and bank interest. Her husband, Amitabh Roy, is identified in the documents as a businessman by profession.
The candidate’s total movable assets are valued at approximately Tk 10.50 crore. This includes significant liquid and fixed investments, as well as luxury vehicles. Conversely, her husband’s movable assets are valued at over Tk 3.5 crore. In terms of immovable property, she disclosed the ownership of a flat purchased for Tk 85.20 lakh, though the specific geographical location of the property was not disclosed in the filing.
The following table provides a structured overview of the assets and liabilities declared by the candidate:
