Gloom and frustration have gripped cricket-obsessed Pakistan following their shocking early exit from the Champions Trophy, just days after the country celebrated the return of a major international tournament.
Pakistan, the defending champions, endured a disastrous campaign, beginning with a 60-run defeat to New Zealand in Karachi. Their woes deepened when they suffered a crushing six-wicket loss to arch-rivals India on Sunday, putting them on the brink of elimination.
Their slim hopes of a semi-final berth rested on Bangladesh beating New Zealand, but that result did not go in their favor, sealing Pakistan’s fate. As a result, Thursday’s match against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi has been reduced to a mere formality.
Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram did not mince words about the team’s shortcomings.
"We have been backing these players for the last few years, but they are neither learning nor improving," he said. "It’s time for a major shake-up. We need to revamp our domestic cricket system to produce quality players, not just ordinary ones."
Experts point to the weak domestic cricket structure and subpar pitch conditions, which fail to prepare players for the international stage.
Former captain Rashid Latif echoed the sentiment, blaming frequent changes in the cricket board, coaching staff, and selection panels for Pakistan’s decline.
"We have to follow merit and bring in professionals to manage the game, rather than appointing people for political reasons," he said.
For Pakistan’s passionate cricket fans, this elimination is especially painful. The Champions Trophy was the country’s first major international tournament in nearly three decades, following improvements in security.
"We were thrilled to host a major event again, but the joy was short-lived," said 26-year-old Umar Siraj, a pharmacist from Rawalpindi. "The worst part of being a Pakistan fan is that you end up praying for other teams to lose."
The latest setback adds to a string of failures. Pakistan also crashed out in the first round of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India and faced an early exit in the T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies. Just last month, they finished last in the World Test Championship after failing to secure a series win at home against the West Indies.
For many, this latest debacle on home soil marks a new low.
"They didn’t even put up a fight," lamented Naseem Satti, a 46-year-old government employee. "We have no quality bowlers, no reliable batters—it feels like cricket is dead in Pakistan."
But for fans like 52-year-old housewife Asma Batool, cricket remains more than just a sport.
"Cricket is the only source of entertainment for our youth," she said. "Our nation finds solace in this game."
With mounting frustration and demands for change, Pakistan cricket stands at a crossroads. Whether the calls for reform lead to real transformation or more of the same remains to be seen.
