Three individuals, including a filling station manager, have been detained by law enforcement following the physical assault of a police constable at a petrol station owned by a prominent local political figure. The incident occurred on Sunday, 26 April 2026, at the Raihan Filling Station, located in the Khoyrabad area of Rohanpur Municipality, under the jurisdiction of Gomostapur Upazila in Chapainawabganj.
The victim, identified as Police Constable Shawkat Ali, serves as the vehicle driver for the Nachol Police Station. He was reportedly subjected to physical violence while attempting to procure engine oil for an official police vehicle.
According to official police reports, Constable Shawkat Ali arrived at the Raihan Filling Station during the afternoon to collect engine oil. He had submitted the requisite requisition slip and was waiting near the cash counter for the transaction to be processed. At the time, the constable was dressed in civilian attire.
The filling station is owned by Ashraf Hossain Alim, the former Chairman of Gomostapur Upazila Parishad and a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The altercation reportedly began when Abdullah Al Raihan, the younger son of the owner and the current President of the Gomostapur Union BNP, engaged in verbal misconduct towards the waiting constable.
When Constable Ali protested against the unprofessional behaviour, the situation escalated. Witnesses at the scene reported that Raihan launched a physical attack on the officer, which included slapping and striking him with a stick. Witnesses further alleged that such aggressive conduct from the petrol station management towards customers has occurred on previous occasions.
Following the assault, Constable Shawkat Ali was transported to the Gomostapur Upazila Health Complex for emergency medical attention. Dr Shahidul Islam, the Residential Medical Officer of the facility, confirmed that the constable was admitted with visible injuries.
“The injured police officer was brought to the hospital in the afternoon. We have provided him with the necessary medical treatment, and he currently remains under observation within the medical facility,” Dr Islam stated.
Despite multiple attempts to contact the management of the Raihan Filling Station via telephone for a formal response to the allegations, representatives declined to offer any comment regarding the incident or the subsequent police action.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gomostapur Police Station, Nure Alam, confirmed that law enforcement acted swiftly following the report of the assault. Acting on the information, police conducted a raid on the filling station and detained three employees, including the station manager, for preliminary questioning.
OC Nure Alam stated:
“We have detained three individuals, including the manager of the petrol station, for primary interrogation in connection with the assault on the police constable. Legal proceedings are currently being processed, and further action will be taken based on the findings of our investigation.”
The district police administration has taken a serious view of the assault on a uniformed officer’s driver, even though he was in plain clothes at the time of the incident. In Chapainawabganj, as in the rest of the country, any physical interference with law enforcement personnel is treated as a non-bailable offence under the relevant sections of the Bangladesh Penal Code.
The local BNP unit has yet to issue an official statement regarding the involvement of Abdullah Al Raihan in the incident. Law enforcement has indicated that they are seeking to record the formal statement of the victim as part of the First Information Report (FIR). The petrol station remains under police surveillance as the investigation continues to determine the extent of the involvement of the detainees and the primary suspect.
