The untimely demise of actor Rahul Banerjee has cast a profound shadow over the Bengali film and television industry, commonly referred to as Tollywood. Colleagues, admirers, and fans have expressed deep sorrow, while at the same time raising serious questions surrounding the circumstances of his death. Amid growing concern, actor Rudranil Ghosh has made strong remarks, demanding clarity and accountability.

Speaking on the tragedy, Ghosh described Rahul’s passing as nothing short of devastating. He said that losing a colleague who was healthy, intelligent, articulate, and professionally committed in such a sudden manner is extremely difficult to comprehend. Addressing the media from near the cremation ground at Keoratola, he noted the presence of several prominent industry figures, emphasising that people across political and professional divides had gathered in mourning.

Ghosh reflected on Rahul’s personality, portraying him as a principled individual who rarely compromised on integrity. He stated that Rahul possessed a strong sense of self-respect and consistently defended his opinions with logic and reasoning. According to him, such individuals are increasingly rare in the contemporary entertainment industry.

He further raised concerns about safety protocols in the film industry, alleging that there is no dedicated or structured safety budget for actors and technicians during outdoor shoots. While certain guidelines exist, he suggested that enforcement is inconsistent and often inadequate.

Ghosh also pointed to inconsistencies in eyewitness accounts from those present at the shooting location in Talsari. He claimed that statements given by different members of the crew do not align with one another. Additionally, he referred to post-mortem findings suggesting that the actor may have remained submerged for approximately one hour, a detail he found difficult to reconcile with other narratives.

He further mentioned that individuals associated with the hotel where Rahul had been staying informed him that the actor could not have been underwater for such a prolonged period. According to him, the sea conditions at Talsari were relatively calm, more akin to a shallow estuarine stretch rather than rough open waters, making the incident even more puzzling.

Rudranil Ghosh suggested that the accident occurred during a drone shoot sequence, although he stressed that there is a lack of clarity regarding the exact sequence of events. He insisted that the contradictions in testimonies raise the possibility of misinformation or deliberate concealment. As a result, he called for a thorough, impartial, and high-level investigation into the incident.

Expressing concern over future safety, he warned that ignoring such incidents could lead to repeated tragedies. He emphasised that any actor or technician could face a similar fate if systemic negligence persists.

He urged industry bodies responsible for safeguarding artists and technicians to take immediate corrective action. According to him, associations representing performers and technical crews must establish strict safety protocols and ensure their implementation across all outdoor productions.

Ghosh also stressed the need for a mandatory safety budget in every production. He argued that accountability should not be influenced by an individual’s status, influence, or connections, but should be based solely on facts and responsibility.

Finally, he appealed to the media fraternity to continue highlighting such issues responsibly, noting that journalists often accompany film crews during shoots and are equally exposed to potential risks. He concluded by calling for truth, transparency, and systemic reform within the industry to prevent such tragedies in the future.
