MOSCOW, 26 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Russia’s newly appointed ambassador to the United States, Alexander Darchiev, has departed for Washington, according to a source who spoke to the TASS news agency on Wednesday. This move comes as both nations work towards mending relations that had been deeply strained following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Darchiev, who was named to the post in February, is taking up his new role at a time when diplomatic discussions between Russia and the United States have been underway to address various issues. The renewal of talks marks a shift in relations, particularly after US President Donald Trump’s return to office in January, which has led to a softening of tensions between the two powers. The ambassadorial post had been vacant since last year.

At 64 years of age, Darchiev brings extensive diplomatic experience to his new role, having served in various capacities within the Russian Foreign Ministry since 1992. Most recently, he headed the ministry’s North American department, making him well-versed in the complexities of US-Russia relations.

The announcement of Darchiev’s departure for Washington comes on the heels of a significant development in international diplomacy: the United States confirmed it had brokered a maritime ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea. However, Russia has made it clear that the ceasefire deal will not come into effect until international sanctions, particularly those affecting its food and fertiliser exports, are lifted.

The situation reflects the broader geopolitical context in which Russia and the US are trying to navigate an increasingly fraught international landscape, with many of the outstanding diplomatic challenges centred on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and its global ramifications.
