Liam Roznier’s tenure as Chelsea head coach got off to a frustrating start as his side suffered a 3-2 defeat at home against Arsenal in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final last night. The loss has placed Stamford Bridge under pressure, with Chelsea now needing a victory at the Emirates in the second leg to keep their hopes of a final alive.

Roznier became the seventh consecutive Chelsea coach to fail to win their home debut. Among these seven managers, five drew and two were defeated in their first home matches. The last coach to secure a victory in his opening game at Stamford Bridge was Maurizio Sarri back in August 2018.

Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta marked another milestone of his own. He remained unbeaten in his last eight matches at Stamford Bridge across all competitions, recording four wins and four draws. Arteta is only the second Arsenal coach to achieve such a feat, following Arsène Wenger, who went unbeaten in nine consecutive visits from September 1998 to April 2005.

The match itself began ominously for Chelsea, as they fell behind within seven minutes. Ben White gave Arsenal an early lead, and Victor Yokeres doubled the advantage in the 49th minute. Chelsea responded through Alejandro Garnacho in the 57th minute, offering a glimmer of hope, but Martin Zubimendi restored Arsenal’s two-goal cushion in the 71st minute. Garnacho scored again in the 83rd minute, completing his brace, though it was not enough to secure a comeback.

Garnacho’s two goals mark a historic achievement: he became the first Premier League player to score braces in both the quarter-final and semi-final of the same League Cup campaign. Previously, Edin Džeko had accomplished this for Manchester City in the 2013–14 season.

Roznier, who replaced Enzo Maresca, acknowledged the disappointment of the opening match. “Conceding the first goal was frustrating. It was a team defensive lapse, not solely down to Rob (Sanchez),” he said. He took full responsibility for the defeat, adding, “I asked Rob to do something he hasn’t done before. I made it clear before the match: if my players make mistakes, that responsibility is mine.”

Arteta, whose side has been in impressive form this season, praised his players after the victory. “First, I must commend the boys. We faced a very strong opponent, and their performance was outstanding,” he said.
