Taylor Swift is facing legal action in the United States over the title of her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, after a writer alleged trademark infringement and unfair competition in a case filed in California federal court.

The complaint, lodged on Monday, names Swift and Universal Music Group Recordings as defendants and seeks unspecified damages alongside a court injunction to halt further use of the album title. The claimant, Maren Wade, argues that the wording of Swift’s album is confusingly similar to her own long-established creative brand and risks misleading consumers.

Wade’s legal representative, Jaymie Parkinnen, said in a statement that the dispute centres on protecting a creator’s identity in a competitive entertainment landscape. “A solo performer who spent twelve years building a brand shouldn’t have to watch it disappear because someone bigger came along,” the statement read.

Wade, who previously appeared on America’s Got Talent, began using the phrase Confessions of a Showgirl in 2014 as a column for Las Vegas Weekly. Since then, she has expanded the concept into a broader entertainment brand, including podcasting and live performances. According to the filing, the mark is registered for use across stage productions, television content, and related entertainment services.

The lawsuit contends that Swift’s album title is “confusingly similar” and targets the same consumer demographic. It further alleges that following the album’s release, the phrase “The Life of a Showgirl” appeared widely across merchandising, packaging, and retail distribution channels, increasing the likelihood that the public might assume an association between the two parties.

Wade also claims that her attempt to register the mark faced resistance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, which reportedly cited potential confusion with existing entertainment-related trademarks, including her own. The filing argues that despite this overlap, the continued commercial use of Swift’s album title has undermined Wade’s brand identity, with some audiences allegedly believing she copied the singer’s work.

Swift has not publicly commented on the proceedings. The artist, however, maintains a substantial intellectual property portfolio managed through TAS Rights Management, while merchandising activities are handled by Bravado, a division of Universal Music Group.

Legal specialists note that trademark disputes of this nature often turn on the likelihood of consumer confusion, prior use in commerce, and the scope of registered protection within the entertainment sector. They also suggest that earlier trademark registration typically carries significant weight in court assessments.

At this stage, the case may proceed either through litigation or potential settlement discussions between the parties, depending on whether Swift’s legal team chooses to contest the allegations or seek an out-of-court resolution.
