The Syrian Interior Ministry announced late on Saturday that clashes in the southern city of Sweida have officially ceased and tribal fighters have been evacuated from the area. This marks a significant de-escalation following weeks of violence.
According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Noureddine al-Baba, the Ministry of Interior succeeded in facilitating a ceasefire agreement after extensive efforts. As part of this, Syrian forces were deployed to the northern and western regions of Sweida Governorate, which played a pivotal role in quelling the violence that had gripped the city.
The ministry’s statement on Telegram confirmed that tribal fighters were completely evacuated from the city of Sweida, and hostilities in the city’s neighbourhoods were brought to an immediate halt.
Key Points of the Ceasefire Agreement:
| Action | Details |
|---|---|
| Ceasefire | Clashes in Sweida have stopped |
| Tribal Fighters Evacuated | All tribal fighters removed from city |
| Deployment of Forces | Syrian forces deployed in northern and western Sweida Governorate |
| Efforts by Ministry of Interior | Extensive measures led to the ceasefire |
This development follows intense negotiations and efforts from the Ministry of Interior to enforce peace. It comes at a time when the country has been grappling with escalating tensions, particularly in the southern regions.
The conflict had seen violent clashes between rival tribal factions within the city, contributing to widespread instability. The government’s intervention, bolstered by the deployment of additional security forces, appears to have had a positive impact, restoring a fragile peace.
While the situation remains delicate, the cessation of hostilities offers a glimmer of hope for a return to normalcy in the region, which has long been a hotspot for sectarian and tribal tensions.
