Popular Bangladeshi singer and actor Tahsan Khan has been reappointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), extending his long-standing association with the global refugee agency. His renewed tenure was formally confirmed on Wednesday, 22 April.
The reappointment underscores UNHCR’s continued reliance on public figures who can amplify the voices of displaced communities, particularly the Rohingya refugees currently residing in Bangladesh. Tahsan has been closely engaged with humanitarian advocacy since first assuming the role in 2021.
Reflecting on the ongoing displacement crisis, Tahsan highlighted that nearly a decade has passed since hundreds of thousands of Rohingya people fled violence in Myanmar and sought refuge across the border. He stressed that, in the absence of a durable solution, sustained compassion and international attention remain essential. According to him, the lived experiences of displaced families are marked by profound loss, yet also remarkable resilience.
During his visits to refugee settlements in Cox’s Bazar, Tahsan has met numerous families who shared deeply personal accounts of hardship. He noted that these encounters have had a lasting emotional impact on him and strengthened his commitment to sharing their stories with a wider global audience. He also emphasised that many refugees continue to express a strong desire for safe and dignified repatriation.
UNHCR’s Representative in Bangladesh, Ivo Freijsen, welcomed the extension of Tahsan’s role, describing him as a “dedicated and influential voice” for displaced people. He expressed optimism about continued collaboration in promoting protection, dignity and long-term solutions for refugee populations.
Tahsan has been actively involved in a range of humanitarian initiatives, including field visits to camps in Cox’s Bazar, participation in awareness campaigns such as World Refugee Day, and engagement with communities affected by emergencies, including a major camp fire in 2025. He described witnessing such disasters as a stark reminder of the precarious living conditions faced by refugees.
| Indicator | Estimate / Detail |
|---|---|
| Total Rohingya refugees | Approximately 1.2 million |
| Main location | Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh |
| Number of camps | 33 densely populated camps |
| First UNHCR appointment of Tahsan | 2021 |
| Current UNHCR Goodwill Ambassadors globally | Around 36 |
The Rohingya population in Bangladesh remains one of the largest stateless refugee communities in the world. Concentrated primarily in Cox’s Bazar, the camps face persistent challenges including overcrowding, limited infrastructure, and vulnerability to natural disasters.
As one of UNHCR’s 36 global Goodwill Ambassadors, Tahsan continues to play a significant role in raising awareness and mobilising public support for displaced populations. His renewed appointment is expected to further strengthen advocacy efforts focused on protection, dignity and long-term humanitarian solutions.
