Today, 26 February, marks the 90th birth anniversary of Bir Sreshtho Noor Mohammad Sheikh, one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated war heroes. Born on 26 February 1936 in Mahishkhola village, Narail Sadar Upazila, Noor Mohammad Sheikh grew up under challenging circumstances, losing both his father, Mohammad Amanat Sheikh, and his mother, Jennatunnesha (alternatively recorded as Jennata Khanom) at an early age. Despite these hardships, he completed his education up to the seventh grade, laying the foundation for a life defined by courage and sacrifice.
Noor Mohammad Sheikh joined the East Pakistan Rifles (EPR) on 26 February 1959, which later evolved into the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). His initial service took him to the Dinajpur border, where he gained extensive experience in frontier duties. On 10 July 1970, he was transferred to the Jessore sector and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Lance Naik.
During the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, Noor Mohammad Sheikh became an active member of the 8th Sector, which was responsible for operations in the Jessore region. Under the command of Captain Nazmul Huda, he fought bravely against the Pakistani army in the Boyra area of Kashipur, Sharsha Thana. The sector saw two commanders during the war: Colonel (Retd.) Abu Osman Chowdhury from April to August, and Major S.A. Manjur from September to December.
Tragically, Noor Mohammad Sheikh was martyred on 5 September 1971 during a frontal assault against Pakistani forces in Gowalhati and Chutipur, Jessore. He was laid to rest in Kashipur village, Sharsha Thana, leaving behind a legacy of unparalleled heroism. For his extraordinary courage and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the nation’s highest gallantry award, Bir Sreshtho.
In honour of his birth anniversary, the Noor Mohammad Trust and the Narail District Administration have organised a series of commemorative events in Noor Mohammad Nagar. This morning, ceremonies included floral tributes, discussion sessions, and a prayer gathering, reflecting the enduring respect and admiration for his contributions to Bangladesh’s independence.
