The Bangladeshi academic community is in mourning following the passing of Meherunnessa Chowdhury, a distinguished educator and former Provost of two of Dhaka University’s most prestigious women's residences. Mrs Chowdhury passed away peacefully at her residence in Dhaka on Thursday, at the age of 94. Her remains were interred at the Banani Graveyard on Friday following funeral prayers.

A formidable figure in the history of female education in Bangladesh, Mrs Chowdhury’s career spanned over three decades of institutional leadership. Her journey began in the early 1960s at Barisal Government Women's College, where she served as both a teacher and eventually as the Principal. Her tenure there (1962–1966) is remembered as a formative era for the college, during which she championed higher standards for female scholars.

A Legacy at Dhaka University

In 1967, she transitioned to the University of Dhaka, an institution where she would leave an indelible mark. Initially serving as a House Tutor at Rokeya Hall during the turbulent years leading up to the Liberation War, she was appointed Provost of the hall in 1972. Her leadership was instrumental in the post-war reconstruction of student life, fostering a secure and intellectually stimulating environment for young women.

She subsequently took the helm at Shamsun Nahar Hall, serving as its Provost until 1975. Beyond residential administration, she served as a Student Counsellor at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) from 1976 until her retirement in 1993, guiding generations of students through their academic and personal development.

Distinguished Career Milestones

Mrs Chowdhury’s influence extended beyond the university gates. She played a pivotal role in the governance of Lalmatia College, serving as the Chairperson and a member of the Board of Directors.
