US President Donald Trump on Tuesday categorically dismissed circulating rumours about his health as “fake news” during a press conference at the White House.
Over the past week, Trump had not made any public appearances or held press briefings, prompting speculation about his wellbeing. The absence was particularly noticeable for the 79-year-old president, who is renowned for his frequent media presence.
Combined with his age — making him the oldest person ever elected US president — and recent photographs showing a bruised hand and swollen ankles, the lack of communication from the Oval Office sparked widespread concerns. Some social media users even suggested that Trump had passed away, alleging a White House cover-up.
When asked by Fox News reporter Peter Doocy during the press conference: "How did you find out over the weekend that you were dead?"
Trump replied with humour: "I didn't see that… That's fake news."
In July, the White House clarified the causes of Trump’s visible health signs:
| Symptom | Explanation |
| Discolouration on right hand | "Tissue irritation from frequent handshaking" and regular aspirin use as part of a standard cardiovascular regimen |
| Swollen legs | Chronic venous insufficiency, a common vein condition in which damaged leg veins fail to properly circulate blood |
Presidential physician Sean Barbabella confirmed that Trump “remains in excellent health”, despite these minor conditions.
Trump has frequently emphasised his robust health and high energy levels, with the administration even releasing images portraying him as Superman.
The health of US presidents has historically attracted close scrutiny. However, with the White House hosting its two oldest occupants since 2017 — Trump and predecessor Joe Biden — public attention on presidential fitness has intensified.
Trump has also alleged that Democrats concealed the mental and physical decline of Joe Biden, who was 82 at the end of his term in January. Biden’s health had been a significant issue in the 2024 election, contributing to his decision to withdraw from the race for a second term after a poor debate performance against Trump.
