A deeply tragic incident in Joypurhat’s Panchbibi upazila has claimed the lives of two young brothers after they drowned in a local pond, casting a pall of grief over their village and beyond.
The heartbreaking event occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Majhina Lohar village. The deceased have been identified as Hossain Ali (12), a fifth-grade student, and his younger brother Rahmat Ali (10), a fourth-grade student. Both were the sons of Enamul Haque, a resident of the same village.
According to local sources and police accounts, the two siblings had been playing with friends near their home in the afternoon, as is common for children in the rural area. At some point during play, the boys reportedly slipped unnoticed into a nearby pond. Their absence went unrecognised for a short while, until concerned family members began searching for them.
As the search intensified, villagers eventually discovered the boys in the pond and rushed them out of the water. They were immediately taken to Panchbibi Upazila Health Complex. However, attending physicians declared both children dead upon arrival, confirming that they had succumbed to drowning before receiving medical attention.
The sudden loss has devastated the family, while residents of Majhina Lohar village have been left in shock. Neighbours described the brothers as cheerful and close, often seen together in the neighbourhood, making the incident even more painful for the community.
Police from Panchbibi Police Station visited the scene shortly after being informed of the incident. Authorities confirmed the details and stated that there were no signs of foul play or any allegations surrounding the deaths. Following necessary procedures, preparations were underway to hand over the bodies to the grieving family.
A police official noted that accidental drowning incidents in rural ponds remain a persistent concern, particularly involving children who often play unsupervised near water bodies.
