Virat Kohli has further solidified his status as a legendary figure in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by becoming the first player in the tournament’s history to surpass the 9,000-run milestone. This historic achievement occurred during a dominant performance by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) against Delhi Capitals, where the former Indian captain guided his side to a comprehensive nine-wicket victory.
The fixture was marked by a catastrophic batting collapse from Delhi Capitals. They set an unwanted record for the lowest score during a powerplay in IPL history, reeling at 13/6 within the first six overs. The team was eventually bowled out for a mere 75 runs.
In response, Royal Challengers Bengaluru chased the target with ease. While fans might have felt short-changed by Kohli’s relatively brief stay at the crease due to the low target, he remained unbeaten on 23 runs. It was during this innings that he reached the nine-thousand-run landmark, taking a single off the final delivery of the sixth over bowled by spinner Axar Patel.
Kohli has consistently been the “First Boy” of IPL batting milestones. Before reaching the 9,000-run mark in 2026, he was the first player to cross the 6,000, 7,000, and 8,000-run thresholds.
6,000 runs: Achieved in 2021
7,000 runs: Achieved in 2023
8,000 runs: Achieved in 2024
The gulf between Kohli and his contemporaries is significant. Having played in the league since its inception in 2008, Kohli has amassed 9,012 runs in 267 innings. His closest rival, Rohit Sharma, follows with 7,183 runs, trailing by a margin of 1,829 runs despite having started his IPL career in the same year.
| Player | Matches | Innings | Total Runs | 100s | 50s |
| Virat Kohli | 275 | 267 | 9,012 | 8 | 66 |
| Rohit Sharma | 276 | 271 | 7,183 | 2 | 43 |
| Shikhar Dhawan | 222 | 221 | 6,769 | 2 | 50 |
| David Warner | 184 | 184 | 6,565 | 4 | 62 |
| KL Rahul | 153 | 144 | 5,580 | 4 | 41 |
Kohli also leads the top five run-scorers in several sub-categories. He holds the record for the most centuries (8) and half-centuries (66). Furthermore, he has hit the most fours (808). In terms of sixes, he is currently second to Rohit Sharma; Sharma has hit 310 sixes compared to Kohli’s 305. These two remain the only players in the top five to have cleared the boundary over 300 times.
The 2026 season continues to see a fierce competition for the “Orange Cap.” Abhishek Sharma of Sunrisers Hyderabad currently leads the table with 380 runs in eight innings. Kohli sits in fourth place with 351 runs from the same number of matches. However, amongst the top five run-scorers this season, Kohli boasts the highest batting average at 58.50, underscoring his sustained efficiency at the crease.
