A dispute over a goat eating grass in a residential courtyard has resulted in the death of a 45-year-old woman in Ashulia, Dhaka. The victim, identified as Rupban Begum, succumbed to her injuries on Saturday morning, 6 June, whilst undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), commonly known as the Pangu Hospital, in the capital.
According to local residents and police sources, the incident initiated on the morning of Thursday, 4 June.
The Trespass: A goat belonging to Rupban Begum entered the courtyard of a neighbour, Ali Sarkar (55), to graze on the grass.
The Incitement: Infuriated by the animal’s presence, Ali Sarkar allegedly attacked and killed the goat with a sharp weapon.
The Confrontation: Upon discovering the fate of her livestock, Rupban Begum approached Ali Sarkar to demand an explanation. An altercation ensued between the two parties.
The Assault: During the verbal dispute, Ali Sarkar reportedly struck Rupban Begum on the leg with a sharp machete (da) before fleeing the scene.
Hospitalisation and Death: Nearby residents rescued the severely injured woman and transported her to the Pangu Hospital in Dhaka. She passed away from her injuries on Saturday morning.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station, Mohammad Tarikul Islam, confirmed the details of the fatality on Saturday afternoon.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Abu Talib of the Jamgara Police Outpost stated via a telephone communication that a formal case has been registered regarding the incident. The accused, Ali Sarkar, has been absconding since the assault occurred. Law enforcement authorities have initiated a comprehensive operation to apprehend the suspect.
