India Outplayed by Australia in Rain-Shortened One-Day International

India’s new ODI captain Shubman Gill endured a disappointing debut as his side suffered a crushing defeat against Australia in the opening match of the series. The Indian batting order collapsed dramatically, with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and the captain himself all failing to score runs upon their return to the national side after 224 days.

Persistent rain interruptions turned the scheduled 50-over match into a 26-over contest, but even that failed to help India, who managed only 136 runs for 9 wickets. Under the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method, Australia were set a revised target of 131 runs, which they easily chased down in 21.1 overs, winning by 7 wickets to take a 1–0 lead in the series.

The morning in Perth began under overcast skies, making the toss crucial. Gill lost it, and India had to bat first under testing conditions. From the outset, the batting lineup faltered:

  • Rohit Sharma looked unsettled and was caught in the slips for just 8 runs off Josh Hazlewood.
  • Virat Kohli, returning after a long break, failed to open his account. Attempting to play outside the off-stump repeatedly, he was dismissed by Mitchell Starc, caught at point by Cooper Connolly.
  • Shortly after, Shubman Gill himself edged a delivery outside leg stump to the wicketkeeper, while Shreyas Iyer fell to a similar mistake.

The game was halted four times due to rain, and each stoppage further disrupted India’s rhythm. The overs were eventually reduced from 50 to 32, and then finally to 26, forcing India’s batters into a desperate push for runs.

Despite some late resistance from KL Rahul (38) and Axar Patel (31), India’s total reached only 136 runs. Under the DLS adjustment, their effective score was 130, leaving the bowlers with little to defend.

Chasing a modest target of 131 runs, Australia’s openers Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh approached the innings calmly.

  • Head struck two boundaries in the opening over, but was dismissed soon after attempting a big shot off Arshdeep Singh.
  • Matthew Short, coming in at number three, also departed cheaply, bowled by Axar Patel.
  • From there, Mitchell Marsh anchored the chase brilliantly, playing a composed captain’s innings, while Josh Philippe supported him steadily with 37 runs.

Marsh remained unbeaten on 46, guiding Australia to a comfortable victory with 29 balls to spare.
