At 10:38 am on Friday, a strong earthquake was felt across Dhaka and other parts of the country. The Department of Meteorology reported that the earthquake measured 5.7 in magnitude and originated in Madhabdi, Narsingdi.
Rubayet Kabir, acting officer of the Earthquake Research Centre, told the media that this is the largest earthquake in the country in the last 30 years.
He stated that the energy released by today’s earthquake is equivalent to the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
So far, 4 people have died due to the earthquake, including 3 in Dhaka. In Rupganj, Narayanganj, a child died when a wall collapsed.
Hundreds of people have been reported injured, though the exact number is not yet confirmed. The fire service has reported that many buildings have been damaged in Dhaka and other parts of the country.
In a statement on Friday afternoon, Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus said the overall situation in the country is being closely monitored, and all relevant departments have been instructed to immediately assess possible damage on the ground.
The Chief Adviser’s message further stated that the government is taking all necessary measures prioritising public safety. Fire service personnel are responding promptly to the reported damages across Dhaka and other regions. People are urged to stay alert and not pay attention to any rumours or misinformation.
Regarding the tilting of the Chief Adviser’s office in Tejgaon, fire service officer Khaleda Yasmin said they have been informed and a team has been dispatched.
