Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning to Europe ahead of crucial discussions with United States envoys on a potential peace agreement centred on Ukraine. He stated unequivocally that if Europe seeks war, Russia is fully prepared right now.
Putin made the remarks on Tuesday, 2 December, in Moscow, shortly before a scheduled meeting with American representatives.
According to Putin, the amendments that Kyiv and European nations wish to add to the US-backed draft peace agreement are entirely unacceptable to Russia. He argued that these proposals do not align with realities on the ground.
Following the meeting, Putin and senior envoys representing US President Donald Trump engaged in a five-hour-long discussion. However, no major breakthrough was achieved.
A Kremlin spokesperson described the talks as constructive, yet confirmed that Russia continues to reject several key elements of the peace plan. Trump’s special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, took part in the meeting, though the US delegation refrained from making any comments afterward.
Representing Russia were Putin’s aides Kirill Dmitriev and Yuri Ushakov.
Ushakov later stated that although the two sides reached understanding on certain points, significant differences remained on several crucial issues. The most contentious matters continue to be the proposal that Russia relinquish control over occupied Ukrainian territories and that Europe provide formal security guarantees.
Ahead of the meeting, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the opportunity to end the war is greater now than at any time before. However, he stressed that any peace deal must include clear security guarantees and an open path to NATO membership—terms Russia has consistently opposed.
