Betrayal and Murder: Police Uncover Motive Behind Killing of Narayanganj Man

The murder of Narayanganj resident Sumon Khalifa has taken a disturbing turn as police revealed that the crime stemmed from an extra-marital affair involving his wife, musician Sonia Akhter. Investigators solved the case within a day, arresting six individuals believed to be connected to the killing, and recovering the weapons used in the attack.

During a press briefing held at the district police headquarters, Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman Munshi outlined the sequence of events leading to the murder. He stated that Sonia’s relationship with accused Mehedi Hasan, also known as Yusuf, had created severe friction within her marriage. Frequent quarrels between Sonia and Sumon reportedly escalated as the affair deepened, pushing the couple towards a breaking point.

Police investigations suggest that Sonia and Mehedi jointly devised the plan to kill Sumon. On 30 November, when Sumon stepped out of a music event in Panchabati, the conspirators seized the opportunity. They summoned him from the club area, coaxed him into a CNG auto-rickshaw and transported him to Char Kashipur. It was in this secluded location that Sumon was attacked with sharp weapons and murdered in cold blood.

The suspects arrested include Sonia (22), Mehedi (42), Abdur Rahman (28), Billal Hossain (58), Alamgir Hawlader (45) and Nannu Mia (55). Police say that the murder was meticulously planned, with each suspect playing a specific role in the execution of the crime. A machete and a switchgear—key pieces of evidence linking them to the killing—were recovered during the arrests.

SP Munshi noted that the first major breakthrough came after Mehedi’s capture, aided by digital tracking technology. His admissions provided critical information, enabling police to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects without delay. The entire operation was completed within twenty-four hours of the case being filed.

Sumon’s mutilated body was found the following morning in Middle Narsinghpur, sending shockwaves through the locality. His father, 70-year-old Montu Khalifa, filed a case with Fatullah Police Station later that night, accusing unknown assailants of murdering his son. The rapid pace of the investigation has been widely praised by locals, though the details of the crime have left many unsettled.

Police have not ruled out the involvement of additional individuals. “We are analysing whether more people were involved or if anyone assisted the suspects in any capacity,” said SP Munshi. “Our investigation is ongoing and no angle will be ignored.”

Residents of Siddhirganj and Fatullah have expressed a mixture of grief and outrage. Many knew Sumon as a calm and hardworking man who supported his wife’s musical career. News of his murder, allegedly orchestrated by his spouse and her lover, has provoked widespread condemnation.

As the investigation continues, the case stands as a stark reminder of how domestic conflict, when left unchecked, can devolve into premeditated violence with devastating consequences for families and communities alike.
