Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison

In a landmark ruling, Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Najib Razak has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for charges of corruption and abuse of power. The historic verdict was delivered on Friday, 26 December, marking a significant moment in the country’s legal and political history.

The court found Najib guilty on all counts: 21 charges of money laundering and four charges of abusing his official powers. According to the ruling, Najib had diverted MYR 2.2 billion (approximately USD 490 million) from the state-owned 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fund into his personal bank accounts.

Presiding Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah stated in his judgement:

“The defendant argued that these charges were politically motivated and intended as retribution. However, the overwhelming and indisputable evidence completely refutes that claim. The facts clearly demonstrate that he abused his position in 1MDB and misused the powers vested in him as Prime Minister and Finance Minister.”

The case against Najib was initiated more than a decade ago. Prosecutors alleged that during his tenure as Prime Minister, Finance Minister, and Chairman of the 1MDB advisory board, Najib misappropriated enormous sums of public funds for personal gain.

The court has handed down the following sentences, which will run concurrently:

Charge Type Number of Charges Sentence per Charge Total Sentence (Concurrent)
Abuse of Power 4 15 years each 15 years
Money Laundering 21 5 years each 15 years

Previously, in 2020, Najib had received a 12-year prison sentence for separate corruption charges, which was later reduced to six years. This latest verdict constitutes his second conviction, intensifying his legal troubles and reinforcing Malaysia’s ongoing anti-corruption efforts.

Al Jazeera reported that the case has drawn widespread international attention, symbolising the country’s commitment to holding powerful leaders accountable. Observers have noted that the ruling may have far-reaching implications for political accountability and governance in Malaysia, sending a strong message that no one is above the law.
