A United States citizen has been fatally shot by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota, marking the second such deadly encounter in just one month and intensifying nationwide concern over the agency’s use of force. The deceased has been identified as Alex Pretty, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident and US citizen.
According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, Pretty sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment at a local hospital. The Department of Homeland Security stated that ICE agents were attempting to disarm Pretty, whom they alleged was armed at the time of the confrontation.
However, discrepancies have emerged between official accounts and video evidence captured by bystanders. Reuters has verified footage showing that Pretty was holding a mobile phone, not a firearm, while assisting demonstrators protesting against ICE agents. Independent investigative collective Bellingcat reported that a weapon had been removed from Pretty prior to the first shot being fired. Despite this, he was shot at least ten times, including after he had fallen to the ground.
Police Chief O’Hara confirmed that the weapon initially in Pretty’s possession appeared to be legally owned. He urged the public to remain calm and called on law enforcement officers throughout Minnesota to conduct themselves with heightened professionalism and adherence to humanitarian standards.
This incident comes amid a spate of controversial encounters involving ICE agents. The following table summarises recent cases:
| Date | Name | Age | Location | Summary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-01-05 | Reni Nicole Good | 28 | Minneapolis | Fatally shot by ICE agents |
| 2026-01-21 | Alex Pretty | 37 | Minneapolis | Fatally shot; conflicting reports on weapon possession |
| 2026-01-23 | Unknown (child & father) | 2, 35 | Texas | Child and father detained and transferred by ICE |
The killings have intensified scrutiny of ICE’s operational procedures and sparked widespread criticism from civil rights advocates. Human rights organisations across the country are demanding transparent investigations and greater accountability.
Minneapolis remains tense in the wake of the shooting, with local police and federal agents implementing additional precautions to ensure peaceful engagement with the public. The events have renewed calls for comprehensive federal oversight of ICE operations and the adoption of stricter protocols governing the use of lethal force.
