Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has announced a return to domestic cricket, ending his brief retirement to join Yorkshire County Cricket Club for the 2026 Vitality Blast season. The contract includes an option to extend his stay until the 2027 season.
Ali, a two-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champion with Chennai Super Kings, previously led Worcestershire to their first-ever Vitality Blast title in 2018. He also captained Birmingham Phoenix to the final in the inaugural season of The Hundred, showcasing his leadership abilities in white-ball cricket.
Regarded as one of the most successful limited-overs cricketers of his generation, Ali boasts impressive statistics across domestic and international T20 cricket:
| Format | Matches | Runs | Wickets | Notable Achievements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T20 (Domestic) | 420 | 7,792 | 271 | Highest Vitality Blast score: 121 |
| T20I (England) | 92 | 1,229 | 51 | 7 half-centuries, 2 World Cup wins |
Commenting on his move to Yorkshire, Ali said:
“I am thrilled to play for such a historic club as Yorkshire. The team’s vision for the future is very inspiring. I have always enjoyed playing at Headingley, and this presents a new challenge. I hope to contribute my experience to help the team succeed.”
Yorkshire finished eighth in the North Group last season, failing to secure a Blast title to date. Despite losing key players such as David Malan and Jordan Thompson during the off-season, the club has strengthened its squad with Australian talents Sam Whiteman and Andrew Tye, as well as overseas signings Naveen-ul-Haq and Logan van Beek.
Gavin Hamilton, Yorkshire’s General Manager of Cricket, welcomed Ali’s arrival:
“Securing a world-class all-rounder like Moeen Ali is a significant achievement for the club. His leadership and experience will inject new energy into our T20 squad, and we anticipate a stronger Yorkshire team in the upcoming Vitality Blast.”
Ali’s return is expected to bring both star power and tactical acumen to Yorkshire, potentially boosting their chances of claiming the long-elusive Blast trophy in the coming seasons.
