Baramati Crash: Pilot Not Scheduled to Fly

In Baramati, Maharashtra, the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of five individuals—including industrialist Ajit Pawar—has raised questions over the circumstances surrounding the flight. Among the deceased was Captain Sumit Kapoor, whose friends have claimed that he was not originally scheduled to pilot the aircraft carrying Pawar. According to them, Kapoor took over at the last minute after another pilot was delayed due to traffic.

Friends of Kapoor, speaking to NDTV during his funeral in New Delhi, revealed that the pilot had recently returned from Hong Kong just a few days prior. Only hours before the accident, he was instructed to transport Pawar from Mumbai to Baramati in Pune district for an election rally.

On 28 January, tasked with flying Pawar from Mumbai to his hometown, Kapoor boarded a Learjet 45 operated by Delhi-based VSR Ventures at approximately 8:00 AM. Besides Pawar, three other passengers were on board.

Tragically, during the second attempt to land at Baramati Airport around 8:45 AM, the aircraft crashed, killing all on board:

Name Role Status
Sumit Kapoor Pilot Deceased
Shambhavi Pathak Co-pilot Deceased
Pinky Mali Flight attendant Deceased
Bidip Yadav Security personnel Deceased
Ajit Pawar Passenger Deceased

Initial investigations suggest that poor visibility caused by heavy fog may have contributed to the crash, potentially resulting in a pilot error. Authorities are also examining whether mechanical failure played a role.

Kapoor’s friends, however, strongly contest the possibility of pilot error, emphasising his extensive experience and impeccable record. They have called for a thorough and transparent investigation to establish the true cause of the crash.

Remembered as a kind-hearted and passionate aviator, Kapoor hailed from a family deeply involved in aviation: both his sons-in-law were pilots, while a brother managed a business in Gurgaon on the outskirts of Delhi. Friends also recalled his concern for others, with anecdotes highlighting his advice on personal health and well-being after returning from Hong Kong.

Kapoor’s body was identified through a bracelet he wore on his wrist, according to close friend Sachin Taneja. Another friend, GS Grover, reminisced about Kapoor’s meticulous nature and caring attitude, underlining the profound loss felt by his family and colleagues.
