Inhumane abuse of a child at Biman MD Shafiqur’s residence

In a shocking revelation that has sent ripples across the nation, a child servant, known under the pseudonym Mayna, endured unimaginable abuse in the home of Shafiqul Rahman, the influential Managing Director of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, and his wife, Bithi.

Mayna was sent to work in the affluent household at the tender age of 11, driven by her family’s economic hardship. Her family hoped she would receive at least modest sustenance and a safe environment. Tragically, this expectation turned into a nightmare. Days and months of brutal abuse left her body scarred, with injuries so severe that they drew immediate concern from medical authorities.

Police reports reveal horrific details of her suffering. Her tormentors allegedly pressed a heated metal object against her body, leaving burn marks. She was also struck with heavy objects, resulting in fractures in her hands and legs. Numerous contusions and dark bruises were observed across her neck, arms, and legs. The child was eventually rescued in a critically injured state and admitted to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for urgent treatment.

Following the incident, both Shafiqul Rahman and his wife were arrested. During a court hearing on Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Raju Ahmed rejected their bail applications and ordered their detention, a decision confirmed by prosecution officer SI Tahmina Akter.

Sources close to the investigation disclosed that the accused couple have children of their own, who reportedly live abroad in comfort funded by wealth amassed through corrupt practices. The case has sparked national outrage over the stark contrast between their privileged life and the extreme suffering inflicted upon an 11-year-old child.

The child’s father, Golam Mostofa, a hotel employee, filed the complaint. According to the police case file, the household’s security officer initially informed him that a young girl was needed for domestic work. Following discussions, Mayna was placed in the home in June of last year, with the assurance that all her expenses and future welfare would be covered. When her father last saw her on 2 November, she appeared healthy. However, on 31 January this year, when he went to collect her upon a call from Bithi regarding her illness, he discovered severe injuries. Mayna was unable to speak properly and exhibited extensive bruising. During medical treatment, she recounted continuous beatings and instances of being burned with hot objects since November.

The police report confirms that the arrests took place on Sunday night in Sector 9, Uttara. The case investigation officer, SI Romer Mia of Uttara West Police Station, requested the court to keep the accused in custody. In contrast, defence lawyer Advocate Zakir Hossain argued for bail, claiming that Shafiqul Rahman’s official duties as a government officer precluded involvement in the abuse.
