Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram), a member of the Standing Committee of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and victorious candidate from Bhola-3, has indicated that the party’s upcoming cabinet will strike a balance between seasoned politicians and newcomers.
Speaking on Monday at a discussion session held at Raoa Club to commemorate the 42nd death anniversary of Liberation War commander General (Retd.) M A G Osmani, Major Hafiz outlined the criteria for ministerial appointments in the prospective BNP government.
He stated, “Those who have actively participated in the struggle against the fascist government will be considered for cabinet positions. Individuals with no history of corruption and who enjoy public trust will be prioritised. The cabinet will be formed through a careful blend of experienced and emerging leaders.”
The BNP leader further reflected on the national election held on 12 February, describing it as “the fairest in the country’s history”. He emphasised the electorate’s role in steering Bangladesh away from potential misrule and highlighted the military’s contribution to ensuring a smooth electoral process.
“Without the support of our armed forces during challenging times, the election could not have been conducted so smoothly,” he remarked, expressing gratitude to the nation’s security services.
Looking ahead to the new parliamentary term, Major Hafiz projected that the BNP-led 11-party alliance will play a strong and proactive role as the opposition.
| Criteria for Appointment | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Anti-Fascist Credentials | Preference for leaders involved in past struggles against oppressive regimes |
| Integrity and Public Trust | Ministers must have clean records and be trusted by the populace |
| Balance of Experience | Combination of veteran politicians and new entrants to ensure continuity and innovation |
| Commitment to National Development | Leaders committed to safeguarding democratic principles and public welfare |
Major Hafiz’s remarks signal a strategic approach for the BNP’s governance, aiming to blend historical experience with fresh perspectives while maintaining public confidence. Observers suggest that this approach may strengthen the party’s appeal among both older supporters and the youth, providing a robust framework for parliamentary opposition and potential governance.
