Across Bangladesh, citizens paid solemn tribute to the heroes of the 1952 Language Movement on 21 February, commemorating International Mother Language Day and Amar Ekushey. District administrations, members of parliament, law enforcement, freedom fighters, and local social and cultural organisations united to honour the martyrs through floral offerings, prayers, and cultural programmes. In Tangail, State Minister Sultan Salauddin Tuku offered flowers at the Shaheed Minar under the supervision of District Commissioner Sharifa Haque. Superintendent of Police Shamsul Alam Sarkar also laid a wreath on behalf of the district police.
In Sirajganj, Minister of Power Iqbal Hasan Mahmud highlighted the inseparable bond between the Language Movement and the Liberation War, noting: “Bangladesh was built on the foundations of our language movement and liberation struggle. It is vital for the new generation to preserve this history.”
In Nangalkot, local authorities, political and social leaders, alongside cultural organisations, paid homage to the martyrs. Meanwhile, in Magura and Joypurhat, ordinary citizens joined the ceremonies, offering flowers and participating in commemorative events.
In Fulpur, Mymensingh, the upazila administration and cultural organisations led a central ceremony that included floral offerings and a prayer session invoking peace for the nation and mercy for the departed martyrs. Upazila Academic Supervisor Paritosh Sutradhar oversaw the event’s organisation and management.
Through these ceremonies, districts across the country are actively preserving and promoting the history and cultural heritage of the Language Movement. This day serves as a vital reminder for the nation’s youth of the values of language and freedom, ensuring that the sacrifices of the martyrs remain an enduring legacy. Each district paid homage in its own distinct manner, reflecting local traditions while honouring the memory of those who laid down their lives for the mother tongue.
