A police constable was stabbed while conducting a routine bag search in the capital city, raising concerns over officer safety during field duties.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Kutubkhali area of Yatrabari, Dhaka, when 33-year-old constable Md. Shah Alam, stationed at Yatrabari Police Station, was attacked. He was immediately rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention.
According to constable Nazrul Islam of Yatrabari Police Station, the incident took place around 2:00 PM near the Pocket Gate checkpost. “While on duty, two young men drew our attention. Observing one of the youths’ bags with suspicion, Constable Shah Alam, acting under his officer’s instructions, proceeded to inspect it. At that moment, the individual attacked him with a knife, striking him on the forehead, and fled the scene,” Nazrul explained.
Following the assault, Shah Alam was initially taken to Rajarbagh Police Line Hospital for first aid. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced treatment later in the afternoon.
Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed that the officer is receiving medical care in the hospital’s emergency department. Authorities have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the attacker, urging the public to come forward with any information.
