A grave incident of alleged sexual misconduct has shaken the community of Zajira in the Shariatpur district, following the detention of a local cleric and madrasa teacher. Abul Bashar, aged 60, who served as an Imam at a local mosque and as a tutor at a women’s madrasa, was taken into police custody on Tuesday evening after being accused of attempting to rape a six-year-old student.
The distressing event reportedly took place on Tuesday afternoon within the confines of the educational institution. According to the victim’s family and local sources, the suspect summoned the young girl to a private room under the guise of academic instruction. It was there that the attempted assault allegedly occurred. The child’s mother, visibly distraught, recounted that her daughter attends the madrasa specifically for religious guidance, making the betrayal of trust by a senior figure particularly abhorrent.
The incident came to light when nearby residents became aware of the child’s predicament and moved swiftly to intervene. A group of locals managed to intercept and confine the suspect within the premises until law enforcement arrived. Officers from the Zajira Police Station subsequently took the cleric into their protection and later formalised his detention.
The victim’s mother has issued an emotional plea to the authorities, demanding the maximum legal penalty for the perpetrator. “My daughter was sent there to learn, not to be preyed upon,” she stated, echoing the sentiments of a community left in a state of disbelief.
As news of the arrest spread, the suspect’s background and political ties became a subject of local debate. One resident expressed profound shock, noting that Abul Bashar was a respected figure in the area due to his dual role as an Imam and a teacher. The resident also claimed that the suspect had long been associated with the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party.
In response to these allegations, Tajul Islam, a member of the Zajira Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami council, clarified the party’s stance. Whilst acknowledging that the suspect was a supporter of the organisation, he distanced the party from the individual’s personal actions.

In a development that has further incensed the public, a video recording of the suspect has surfaced and subsequently gone viral on social media. In the footage, Abul Bashar appears to offer a chilling justification for his alleged actions, attributing the incident to being “deceived by the devil” (Shoytaner dhoka). In the same recording, he is heard confirming his affiliation with Jamaat-e-Islami.
Such justifications have been met with widespread derision by both the victim’s family and civil society members, who argue that attributing criminal behaviour to spiritual deception is a common tactic used to evade personal accountability for heinous crimes.
Saleh Ahmed, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Zajira Police Station, confirmed that the suspect was apprehended immediately following the report. “We have him in custody and are currently processing the evidence. We will ensure that the strict letter of the law is followed, and the necessary legal steps are being taken to bring this matter before the courts,” the OC assured.
The incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding the safety of children within religious and educational institutions. Social activists in Shariatpur are now calling for more stringent vetting of teachers and religious leaders to prevent those in positions of authority from exploiting vulnerable minors. For the family of the six-year-old girl, the road to recovery has only just begun, as they await a judicial process they hope will deliver definitive justice.
