The harvesting of local mango varieties, including Gopalbhog, Govindbhog and Golapkhas, has officially commenced in Satkhira.
The formal inauguration of the collection process was held at around 11:30 am on Tuesday in a mango orchard located in the Fingri area of Satkhira Sadar upazila. The event was inaugurated by Bishnupada Pal, Acting Deputy Commissioner (General) of Satkhira.
Earlier, on 26 April, the Satkhira district administration, in coordination with the Department of Agricultural Extension, fixed a harvesting calendar scheduling mango collection from 5 May onwards. In line with that schedule, harvesting and marketing of local mango varieties such as Govindbhog, Gopalbhog, Bombai, Golapkhas and Baishakhi began from Tuesday.
According to officials, the harvesting schedule was determined following consultations with growers to ensure proper ripening and maintain the quality of the fruit. From today, local varieties including Gopalbhog, Govindbhog, Bombai and Golapkhas are permitted for collection and sale. The Himsagar variety is scheduled to reach the market from 15 May, while Langra will be available from 27 May. Collection and marketing of Amrapali and Mallika varieties are scheduled to begin on 5 June.
The Department of Agricultural Extension in Satkhira has reported that mango cultivation this year covers 4,140 hectares of land across the district. A total of 5,299 orchards are involved in production, cultivated by approximately 45,750 farmers. The district has set a production target of 70,900 metric tonnes of mangoes for the current season. In addition, an export target of 80 metric tonnes has been set. Overall, mango sales during this season are expected to generate approximately 350 crore taka.
Farmer Abu Saeed stated that Sultanpur Boro Bazaar remains the primary wholesale market for mangoes in the region. He also stressed the importance of expanding the market infrastructure and ensuring administrative oversight to prevent any form of market syndication or manipulation.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Bishnupada Pal noted that Satkhira mangoes are in high demand across the country due to their taste and early ripening characteristics. He emphasised that harvesting and marketing mangoes according to the designated schedule helps maintain quality, while premature or delayed collection could damage the reputation of Satkhira’s mango production. He urged both growers and traders to ensure proper handling and marketing standards.
The inauguration programme was presided over by Satkhira Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Arnab Dutta. It was conducted by Senior Agriculture Officer Plaboni Sarkar of Sadar upazila. Other speakers included Satkhira Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Monirul Islam, mango grower Abu Saeed, President of Satkhira Press Club Abul Kashem, former president Mamtaz Ahmed, and journalist Monirul Islam, among others.
